Leijona Brand

Leijona AS cal 1130

The trademark 'Leijona' was originally registered for Switzerland, in October 1909, by Manufacture d'horlogerie "Lion", a company owned by Albert Kenel of Porrentruy. The word "Leijona" translates as "Lion" in Finnish, and the watches were destined for J. W. Lindroos, a jeweller in Tampere, Finland.

In November 1918, three brothers - Jalo, Urho and Oiva Perkko - formed their own retail jewellery company, Oy Perkko Ab, and the following year bought the J.W. Lindroos business. They continued to import Leijona watches from Switzerland, as a house brand, along with more famous names like Omega, Tissot, Certina, and Rado.

Leijona has been by far Finland’s most popular watch brand for over a century. It has accompanied us when we fought for freedom in the battlefields of the notorious Winter war, for victory on the Eurovision Song Contest stage, and for our first gold medal in Men’s Ice Hockey World Championships in Stockholm (1995, never forget). To this day we look to Leijona to clock our lap times and quarantines, to guide us through work weeks and wedding days.
Perkko, the Finnish company manufacturing Leijona watches has been operating with the brand since 1919.
