Why 12hours?
Because the Egyptians used Base-12 (duodecimal) numerical systems
so they could count on one hand with there thumb (four fingers divided by the joints into 3 sections)
Why 60 minutes?
Because The Ancient Babylonians used a base 60 system of counting
12 sections on one hand x five fingers on the other hand (12 x 5 = 60)
(This is also why a circle is divided into 360 degrees)
Ptolemy divided these into smaller parts which he called the "first minute", and those got split into 60 parts which he called the "second minute".
